Beginning of Korean Medical Science

Kwanghyewon, the first western-style hospital in Korea, was opened on 10 April 1885 and it is the start of Severance Department of Surgery and the beginning of Korean medical science. After then, the Severance Department of Surgery has been consistently developed while taking a leading role in Korean medical science. Currently, the Severance Department of Surgery is divided into the surgery departments of upper gastrointestine, colon and anus, liver/biliary/pancreas, breast and endocrine. By constructing teams subdivided by each field, our clinic is actively performing scholarly activities internally and externally while providing best medical services.
Robot-Assisted Surgery First in Korea
The Department of Surgery at Severance Hospital has successfully performed the robot-assisted surgery first in Korea that opens new age of cancer surgery. Currently, this technique is used in the surgical operations for various cancer and liver/biliary/pancreas that may occur from upper body, colon and anus.
