Severance Hospital honors most major credit cards, and a special contract for billing can be arranged between the hospital and foreign companies or embassies. S.O.S. International is a major assistance company which can also guarantee billing.
Direct Billing
Severance Hospital has established direct billing agreements with the following insurance companies:
- American Foreign Service Protective Association (AFSPA)
- AIG Atlas
- AIU (Japan)
- HTH Worldwide (Select Aetna policies, i.e. Seoul Foreign School Employees)
- Seven Corners (Includes Fulbright grantees)
Please present the original insurance card or necessary documents issued by your insurance company when visiting the International Health Care Center at Severance Hospital.
Medication Payment
Please keep in mind that due to the Medical Reform Law effective July 1, 2000, outpatients, with some exceptions, will not be able to purchase medication from the hospital pharmacy. Outpatient medications will need to be paid for and obtained at a pharmacy outside of the hospital. In the case of outpatient medication reimbursements, please work with your insurance company as you normally have in the past to obtain the necessary reimbursements.
Patients should be familiar with their insurance policies, and be aware that not all services offered at Severance Hospital may be covered by their insurance plan. It is the responsibility of the patients to pay the necessary deductibles, co-payments, and non-covered items to Severance Hospital.
International Patients with Korean Health Insurance
Severance Hospital is a tertiary level hospital, and under the stipulations of Korean Health Care Regulations, patients are required to visit primary level or secondary level health care facilities before they can proceed on to tertiary level health care facilities.
Please be advised that those who have Korean National Health Insurance must follow the proper protocol to receive treatment at Severance Hospital. There are two options for patients seeking tertiary level or specialized treatment:
Patients preferring to use outside primary level or secondary level health care facilities must bring in a referral if they need to be seen by a specialist at Severance Hospital. The referral should be brought to the International Health Care Center on the initial check-in date and steps will be taken to arrange for a specialist to be seen.
Referrals to see a specialist at Severance Hospital may also be issued by an International Health Care Center physician. While located within a tertiary level health care facility, the International Health Care Center acts as a primary level health facility and is therefore able to issue referrals to see tertiary level physicians.
If being referred within Severance Hospital, please note that you will be billed for both your visit with the specialist and your visit with the referring doctor.

Please be reminded that your bill may be associated with extra fees, depending on your selected physician. These additional fees, assigned by the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Family Affairs, are structured in accordance to the level and experience of your physician.
Physicians eligible for the application of extra fees, referred to as 선택진료 (Suntaek Jinryo) in Korean, are those who have been practicing in their specialties for 10 or more years or have the status of a professor at a university hospital.
If visiting a physician eligible for the application of extra fees, please note that there will be an ordering fee per every item (i.e. x-rays, labs, etc.) ordered by your physician, and will be applied to your doctor’s fee. As a result, your doctor’s fee will be comprised of the base doctor’s consultation fee and the ordering fee (per every item ordered).
